"Kirk thinks Spock is stalking him (sees him everywhere). Actually, Spock's trying to protect Jim because he loves him."
There was a buzz at his door and Captain James Kirk sat back in his chair, looking up from the PADD on his desk. Rubbing his eyes, he called out, "Come." The door slid open with a whoosh and Jim watched his first officer, Mr. Spock walk in.
"You wanted to see me, Captain?" Spock said standing before Jim at parade rest. Jim nodded his head and stood.
"I did, Spock. I wanted to talk to you about your behavior as of late," Jim said walking around his desk, moving to stand next to Spock. Spock turned so that he faced his captain.
"My behavior, Captain?" Jim nodded placing his hands behind his back.
"Yes, Spock. Your behavior. The last few days I have noticed that you seem to be following me." Jim paused, observing his XO. Spock did not move but his eyes were no longer meeting Jim's. Pursing his lips, Jim continued on.
"At first I thought I was imagining things and then I thought that you were just performing various tasks around the ship, but now I know that you are in fact following me."
Spock made no comment. Jim noted this and continued, "When we were down one that last planet you followed me, despite my direct orders that you were go with Mr. Sulu to gather plant samples."
"Mr. Sulu did not need my assistance and I thought that I would be of more use to you." Spock was looking down at the ground now and Jim stepped in closer.
"I see. That does not explain last night," Jim said and Spock looked up.
"Last night?" The Vulcan asked. Jim nodded.
"Last night Spock, I deliberately took the most roundabout way to the gym I could think of. I even went through a Jefferies tube and yet you stayed with me, step by step. Now, to me that doesn't seem very logical and you are nothing but logical. So tell me Spock, what has come over you?"
Spock was back to looking at the floor and he had shifted his weight from one foot to the other. Jim watched this for some time. Finally Jim said, "Spock, you're not in any kind of trouble. I'm just concerned, because this isn't like you. Now, just tell me what is going on and I can help."
A beat and then Spock answered, "No, what I am doing is not logical, but my condition seems to have overridden my logic." Jim frowned and his face became grave.
"Condition? What condition? Spock, what's wrong?" Jim took Spock by his arms and tried to move his head to look into the Vulcan's face. Spock slowly raised his head and met Jim's gaze, his brown eyes worried and ashamed.
"I would rather not speak of it, Jim. I am just sorry that I have troubled you with my predicament." Jim stared.
"Spock, you're not bothering me. I'm worried about you. Please, tell me what's going on."
"Jim, I ask that you leave this be and not..."
"I order you then as your commanding officer." A silence filled the room and Spock stepped back out of Jim's reach. He looked up and took a deep breath.
"Very well. I have become compromised. I have found that there are things that override mere logic and I am helpless against them."
"Spock..." Jim started but Spock held up a hand.
"Please, allow me to finish." Jim closed his mouth and nodded. Spock placed his hand back behind him and he stepped away as he started to speak again.
"Jim, I doubt you are aware of this but Vulcans, despite their logic, are very emotional race. We carry drives within us that are centuries old. One such drive is how we react when we find a suitable mate. Even if the courtship has not officially started, Vulcan Males will go out of their way to make sure that the one they desire comes to no harm."
Spock turned to look back at Jim, who was now looking rather confused and flustered. Licking his lips, Jim moved so that he once again stood next to his first officer.
"Spock, what are you getting at?" Jim asked, his face starting to turn pink. He noticed that Spock's ears were turning a deep green.
"What I am saying Jim, if we were on Vulcan, my behavior would not seem that strange and..." Spock trailed off, turning his face away. Jim saw that Spock's skin was the color of mint and he felt his own face growing hot.
"And?" Jim asked and Spock turned back to look at him.
"And I would actively be courting you in an attempt to have you as my mate." This made Jim swallowed and take a deep breath. This was not what he had been expecting, but it wasn't that unpleasant. He looked over Spock, who was back to staring at the ground.
"So you're following me, because you're attracted to me?" Jim asked his voice soft.
Not looking up Spock replied, "Because I am in love with you and I could not bear the thought of anything, even the smallest slight, happening to you."
Jim blinked astonished. How long ago was it that he had come to realize that he was in love with Spock? And how long ago was it that he had admonished himself for being foolish? And now this?
He wanted to say something, but how do you reply to a confession like that from your first officer, a man that you respect, admire and adore. Well, the direct approach always worked. Jim took a deep breath.
"Well Spock, I have to say that I'm a little surprised and a bit disappointed." Jim watched Spock's head lift up quickly, one eyebrow raised.
"Disappointed, Jim?" Jim nodded emphatically.
"Oh yes, very. I mean let's face it, Spock. Lurking around the ship and crawling through Jefferies tubes is no way court someone. I prefer to have dinner, see a play, and maybe receive some chocolates. It is after all Valentine's day."
Spock stood speechless and Jim chuckled, giving his first officer a lopsided grin. Jim walked over to Spock and nudged him with his shoulder. His hazel eyes sparkled and slowly he batted his lashes.
" Would you have dinner with me, Spock?"
Spock blinked and Jim could feel his breathing. He watched his first officer's expression change subtly as Spock met his eye. "I will accept your invitation, Jim. I look forward to it."
There the two stood face to face, Jim smiling, giddy at the prospect of having dinner with Spock, and Spock, his expression passive save for the faint creases around the eyes, to show that he was smiling. Then slowly, without thought, they both leaned in and their lips touched.
*15 years later*
Admiral James Kirk sat at his desk and did not look up when his door buzzed. He did not need to, he knew who it was. The door opened with a whoosh.
"Admiral, you wanted to see me?" Jim looked up into the slightly weathered face of his first officer and husband, Captain Spock. Jim removed his glasses and stood, moving around his desk. He stood in front of Spock and holding his hands together at his waist, gave him a stern expression.
"Yes Captain, I did. I wanted to address the matter of you following me around the ship. What have you got to say for yourself?" As he spoke Jim's stern expression started to break and he had to fight to keep from smiling. Spock merely raised an eyebrow.
"I was making sure that no harm comes to you." Spock answered his tone level and Jim feigned alarm.
"Harm, Spock? Really?"
"Indeed. I find you always seem to put yourself at unnecessary risk around this time of year."
"And what time of year is that, Spock?" Now Jim wasn't even trying. He was smiling openly.
"Why Valentine's Day, Admiral." Now Jim's expression was of exaggerated shock.
"Valentine's Day? Well, that explains it. I'm restless and feeling neglected by my sweetheart. I guess I should find some handsome young beau to keep me busy." His tone was teasing and Spock gave Jim an exasperated stare.
"I think that I should confine you to our quarters, perhaps even to bed itself and teach you how behave."
This made Jim laugh merrily. "Promises, promises, Spock." That invoked another raised eyebrow and Jim grinned, stepping closer to Spock.
He leaned in and whispered in a pointed ear, "Why don't I just take you to dinner and then we can discuss my behavior over some champagne and strawberries. Maybe even some chocolate and whipped cream too."
When Jim pulled back, he beamed and felt his heart melt at the sight of Spock, giving him the tiniest of smiles.
"That would be acceptable, Jim."
Holding out his hand in the ozh'esta, Jim said, "Happy Valentine's Day, Spock."
Spock placed his fingers to Jim's and with the soft smile still on his lips said, "Happy Valentine's Day to you, k'diwa."
Jim smiled and there might have been a hint of a blush. "Charmer," he remarked. Spock said nothing but lifted both his eyebrows up. Then slowly, without thought, they both leaned in and their lips touched.
